HARVESTING

Reduced Impact Logging ( RIL) system is being employed for harvesting in Deramakot FR.  Harvesting activities comprises of the following:

Pre-harvest Operations (tree marking and preparation of Comprehensive Harvesting Plan or CHP).

Harvesting Operation (directional felling, winching and hauling of logs by bulldozers confined to pre-determined skid trails and feeder roads).

Post-harvest Operation (constructing water bumps and/or cross drains on skid trails and feeder roads to reduce water runoff, thus, soil erosion).

Marking of trees to be felled prior to harvesting is a regulatory mechanism to meet silvicultural standards set within the framework of Sustainable Forest Management.

This harvesting system require a CHP detailing the distribution of trees to be harvested.  By pre-determining the alignment of feeder roads, skid trails and long distance cable yarding corridors with the terrain and marked trees, soil disturbance is brought to a minimum.  Directional felling of trees enables easier hauling and minimises damage to other trees.

Extraction methods currently used here are the Long Distance Cable Crane Yarding (also known as Skyline Yarding) and Tractor Skidding.
